Penalties

Late filing or payment: $50 or 10% of the net tax due, whichever is greater, plus interest per month (set annually, applied per jurisdiction). You must file even for quarters with zero miles โ€” "no operations" returns take two minutes and skipping them still triggers the $50.

Missed a quarter?

File it now โ€” penalties grow monthly, and two missed quarters is the classic trigger for license revocation and an audit letter. Build the late worksheet in the calculator with that quarter's rates (see the rate table), then file through your base state.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an extension?

No. IFTA has no extension mechanism; the only mitigation is filing the return even if you can't pay in full, which stops the larger of the two penalty clocks in most base states.

What if the due date falls on a weekend?

It rolls to the next business day โ€” that's why Q3 2026 is due November 2 and Q4 February 1, 2027.
