Who must register
Motor carriers (for-hire and private), brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies engaged in interstate commerce. Intrastate-only operations are generally exempt — but crossing a state line even occasionally brings you in.
What it costs
Fees are set per bracket by fleet size — the smallest bracket (0–2 power units) runs under a hundred dollars a year; the exact table adjusts periodically, so confirm the current year's bracket on ucr.gov before paying. Third-party services file the same form for a $40–100 markup; filing yourself on the official portal takes about ten minutes if your USDOT record is current.
The deadline that bites
Registration for a calendar year opens October 1 and is enforced from January 1. States run roadside checks against the UCR database — an unregistered truck can be held until payment, plus state penalties.
Before you file, have ready
Your USDOT number, the number of power units on your last MCS-150, and a card for the fee. If your MCS-150 fleet count is stale, update it first — your bracket is based on it.
