USDOT Numbers, Without the Upsell
The USDOT number itself is free โ FMCSA charges nothing. Services charging $50+ are selling you a form you can complete yourself in twenty minutes. Here's who needs one and how the process actually works.
- The number itself is FREE
- Interstate + certain intrastate
- Biennial MCS-150 update required
- Apply via FMCSA URS
Who needs a USDOT number
Vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR in interstate commerce, anything hauling placardable hazmat, and passenger operations above small-van thresholds. Many states also require USDOT numbers for intrastate commercial vehicles โ check your state's rules.
How to get one (free)
Apply through FMCSA's Unified Registration System (URS) online. You'll classify your operation, list cargo types and fleet size, and receive your number. If you're also getting for-hire authority (an MC number), that federal filing carries a $300 fee per authority type โ but the USDOT number itself never costs anything.
The update everyone forgets
Every two years you must refresh your MCS-150 โ even if nothing changed โ on a schedule set by your USDOT number's digits. Miss it and your number can be deactivated, which cascades into UCR and insurance problems. Set the reminder now.
Frequently asked questions
Is my USDOT number the same as my MC number?
No. The USDOT number identifies your operation for safety tracking; the MC (authority) number authorizes for-hire interstate transport. Many carriers need both; private carriers often need only the USDOT.
How do I look up a company's USDOT number?
FMCSA's SAFER website offers free lookup by name or number โ shippers and brokers use it to vet carriers daily.
A service wants $75 to 'register my USDOT'. Is that a scam?
It's a markup on a free government filing. Not illegal, but unnecessary โ URS walks you through it in about twenty minutes.
