Getting Your Own Authority (MC Number)

Going from leased-on driver to your own authority is the biggest paperwork week in trucking. Here's the real sequence — application, insurance, BOC-3, UCR — with the costs and the waiting periods nobody warns you about.

The actual sequence

1) Apply in FMCSA URS for your USDOT number and authority type — the federal fee is $300 per authority. 2) Your insurer files proof of liability (BMC-91) directly with FMCSA — typically the slowest step; new-authority insurance quotes vary wildly, so shop early. 3) A process agent files your BOC-3. 4) FMCSA's vetting/protest period runs about three weeks from publication. When all three line up, authority activates.

Then the rest of the stack

Same season, you'll also need UCR, Form 2290 if 55k lbs+, and — for apportioned plates and fuel tax — IRP and an IFTA license (our calculator handles the quarterly math). Budget the full stack, not just the $300.

Packages vs DIY

Authority 'packages' from services run $400–900 including government fees. Everything except the BOC-3 is filable yourself; what you're buying is sequencing and hand-holding. Either path is legitimate — just know what the government portion actually costs.
